Corneal topography is a process for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, similar to making a contour map of land.
The purpose of corneal topography is to produce a detailed description of the shape and power of the cornea. Using computerized imaging technology, the 3-dimensional map produced by the corneal topographer aids our ability to diagnose , monitor and treat various visual conditions.
The procedure itself is painless and brief. It is a noncontact examination .
Corneal topography is not a routine test. Rather, it is used in diagnosing certain types of problems, in evaluating a disease’s progression, in fitting some types of contact lenses, and in planning surgery.
The assessment may also include tests of the tear film, the oil glands of the lid and the overall function of the front surface of the eye.
The testing may be used prior to your assessment for surgery or for conditions such as rosacea, dry eye , contact lens issues and corneal problems.
Dr Deans will usually mark one of more of the indications for the testing .
The purpose of the tests is to either help with the assessment prior to surgery, check on the condition of the eye before or after surgery or help with planning for surgery . The cost of the test is not covered by OHIP and will cost from $65- $80. The test is painless and relatively brief. No drops are used for the tests .
